Biofuels from waste
Cities around the world need ways to divert more municipal solid waste from landfills and incinerators. In addition to the environmental problems associated with these practices, it is becoming increasingly difficult to permit new landfills or incinerators due to more stringent regulations and considerable social acceptability issues.
By using municipal solid waste as a feedstock to produce biofuels and renewable chemicals, the Enerkem technology provides a sustainable alternative to the challenges associated with waste disposal. It equally answers the question of how to dispose of rapidly accumulating non-recyclable and non-compostable garbage, while avoiding methane emissions for its decomposition in landfills and creating value-added products from otherwise useless waste.
