Ecoplanta

Tarragona (Spain)

Ecoplanta, located in Spain, is the blueprint for Enerkem’s commercial deployment strategy. The facility will process 400,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste and residual biomass annually and produce 240,000 tonnes of renewable and circular methanol.

  • Developed by global energy leader Repsol, with an investment of more than €800 million.
  • The Final Investment Decision (FID) was confirmed in 2025.
  • Construction is underway, with operations scheduled to begin in 2029.

Innovation Centre

Westbury (Canada)

Enerkem’s Innovation Centre is where the future of our technology takes shape. A cornerstone of our innovation strategy, it enables us to strengthen our technology leadership and stay ahead of market needs.

Here, our researchers explore new feedstocks, optimize our processes, and develop the next generation of solutions for sustainable fuels and chemicals.

Building the foundation for growth

Our journey toward commercial deployment is built on the experience gained through Edmonton Alberta Biofuels and Varennes Carbon Recycling.

Edmonton Alberta Biofuels validated Enerkem’s technology at commercial scale, demonstrating the conversion of municipal waste into sustainable ethanol and methanol while earning recognition from world-class industrial partners.

Varennes Carbon Recycling strengthened our project delivery capabilities by validating our modularization strategy, developing a qualified global supplier network, optimizing logistics for large-scale module deployment, and demonstrating our ability to execute projects with leading international partners.

Prospective sites must offer key industrial synergies to maximize both the economic and environmental performance of the project. This includes access to large-scale industrial gases such as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and natural gas, ideally through existing infrastructure, as well as low-carbon, cost-competitive electricity. Proximity to a deep-water port or inland waterway infrastructure is also a significant advantage for the delivery of large equipment and project logistics. Additional key considerations include access to carbon capture and storage solutions, proximity to feedstock sources and end markets, rail connectivity, and methanol storage capabilities.

A standard facility based on Enerkem's technology processes approximately 400,000 tonnes of waste per year (for a single production train) and produces approximately 240,000 tonnes of sustainable methanol annually. The Ecoplanta project in Spain is a prime example of this model.

Edmonton was a first-generation facility designed to demonstrate and validate the technology at commercial scale. It successfully achieved its objectives by validating the technology and obtaining the required certifications. The knowledge and operational data generated by the facility were incorporated into the design of Enerkem's next-generation plants, which are larger, more efficient, and optimized for commercial deployment. As a result, the Edmonton facility no longer aligned with the requirements of our current technology platform.
