Enerkem Charts Bold Global Path Forward Following Financial Restructuring
Montreal, Canada – September 3, 2025 – Enerkem, a global technology provider enabling low-carbon fuels and chemicals, today announced a new phase of growth, supported by a strengthened financial foundation, renewed investor confidence, and a clear strategy for global market leadership.

With 25 years of developing and commercializing innovative solutions in one of the most challenging and fast-evolving industries, Enerkem is now poised to accelerate delivery of its breakthrough waste-to-methanol gasification technology to clients and partners worldwide. The company’s long-standing presence, deep technical expertise, and proven ability to adapt have been key to its staying power and continued relevance.
In a strong vote of confidence in the company’s future, Enerkem’s former noteholders have instead become its sole shareholders. Their decision reflects their confidence in the company’s technology, leadership, and long-term market potential.
“We’ve been fortunate to have the support of committed investors over the years, and we’re proud that these major stakeholders have chosen to continue with us on the journey ahead,” said Michel Chornet, CEO of Enerkem. “That kind of conviction in the strategic importance of Enerkem’s technology in the transition to circular, sustainable fuels speaks volumes and reinforces the strength of our foundation as we move forward.”
This announcement marks the company’s formal emergence from proceedings under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA), a court-supervised process that enabled Enerkem to complete a successful financial restructuring and recapitalization, delivering a strengthened capital structure and renewed financial stability. With this restructuring complete, Enerkem now moves forward with committed and knowledgeable leadership team, new financing, a revitalized commercial strategy backed by enhanced organizational capabilities, and with its technology know-how intact.
Among its near-term priorities, Enerkem is focused on delivering the Ecoplanta project in Spain and developing a strong project pipeline bringing sustainable methanol and SAF to the market.
Located in Tarragona, Ecoplanta —an €800 million investment from Repsol — will become the first plant in Europe to produce renewable and circular methanol from waste through Enerkem’s gasification technology, the world’s most advanced waste valorization process. The plant, scheduled to start up in 2029, will have the capacity to process up to 400,000 tons of municipal solid waste per year and turn them into 240,000 tons of renewable fuels and circular products.
