Ecoplanta: Setting the Global Standard for Carbon Recycling
Statut : En construction - FID confirmée (Janvier 2025)
Located in the heart of a petrochemical complex near the Port of Tarragona, Spain, Ecoplanta stands out as a flagship project supporting Spain’s energy transition and energy independence.
epresenting an investment of more than €800 millions, the project is led by Repsol and built on Enerkem’s proven technology platform.
Ecoplanta at a Glance
400,000
tonnes/year
of non-recyclable waste and residual biomass diverted from landfills
240,000
tonnes/year
of renewable and circular methanol produced and sold as transportation fuel & chemicals
340,000
tonnes/year
of CO2 equivalent of GHG emission reductions
Europe’s first facility of its kind
Ecoplanta will play a key role in helping meet the European Union’s ambitious 2030-2035 waste management goals.
Scheduled for 2029
Following the Final Investment Decision (FID) obtained in 2025, Ecoplanta is now under construction and remains on track to begin operations in 2029.
Up to 70% of carbon recycled
The process will recover nearly 70% of the carbon contained in waste and convert it into low-carbon methanol for the transportation and chemical industries.

Ecoplanta’s impact
Norwegian Cruise Line Chooses Ecoplanta
Even before commissioning, Ecoplanta’s production has attracted strong market demand. Repsol and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings have signed a landmark eight-year agreement under which, starting in 2029, Ecoplanta’s renewable methanol will help decarbonize cruise vessels operating from the Port of Barcelona, demonstrating the commercial viability of renewable fuels for the maritime sector.
A Transition Model Recognized by the European Union
As the only Spanish project selected by the European Commission’s prestigious Innovation Fund, Ecoplanta has been recognized as a strategic initiative to strengthen Europe’s energy independence and accelerate the transition to a circular economy. Supported by a €106 million grant, the project stands out for its innovative approach to transforming non-recyclable waste into circular chemicals and advanced biofuels.
Leveraging advanced gasification technology and strong carbon emissions reduction performance, Ecoplanta represents a leading model for sustainable waste management in heavy industry. The project is regularly highlighted at international climate conferences, including COP summits, as a benchmark for industrial innovation and the circular economy.
